Assistive Technology Plan
Joel
Joel could use the word prediction software to help with his writing and spelling. WordQ and SpeakQ will allow him to speak and type and hear back what he has written if he has difficulty reading. I suggest SpeakQ. Which will let him speak words instead of typing since he has difficulty with writing. I would also suggest a small scanning device that will scan printed instructions and read them out-loud. This will allow Joel to follow the photography equipment/processing instructions. I would suggest Readingpen 2 Portable Reading Tutor. ($172.50.)
Joel’s employer should also create a checklist of common customer order options that Joel can just check boxes indicating what the customer wants instead of writing out a full note. This checklist could be used for all employees and streamline the process. Customers can even check what they want and thus ensuring an accurate order. This will allow Joel to communicate customer orders without worrying about spelling mistakes.
Joel can also check out the International Guild of Disabled Artists and Performers to look into publishing his photography and networking with other disabled artists.
Linda
Linda should investigate alternative input devices into the computer that will allow to design and draw. She could look into an Adjustable head pointer to use as a keyboard aid, pencil holder, for turning pages or drawing. Other input devices Linda could investigate include Headmouse Extreme. HeadMouse Extreme is a leading solution for wireless head-pointing on the PC or Mac. It replaces the mouse by translating the movements of a user's head into directly proportional movements of the computer mouse pointer. The HeadMouse is a perfect solution for people who cannot use or have limited use of their hands. It even can be used to perform tasks such as drawing or Computer Aided Design (CAD). Another input device is the Jouse 2. The Jouse 2 is an advanced joystick-operated USB mouse that is controlled with your mouth. It has accurate tracking combined with extremely smooth operation and dwell cursor capability, providing an ideal mouse replacement for drawing or any application requiring fine cursor control.
These devices will allow her to expand her digital art skills with Creative Cloud Student and Teacher Edition. She can be working with print media, websites, mobile apps, film or music on any computer. She will also be able to use Adobe’s cloud-based tools to collaborate and share her work with students, educators and future employers – both locally or anywhere in the world. She would have access to the program on any computer and could practice at home or school.
I would also suggest making her computer a touch screen. An option for this would be the Magic Touch Add-On Touch Screens. She would be more easily able to navigate her computer and able to touch the screen wih the use of the adjustalble head pointer.
Linda can also go to the webpage for the International Guild of Disabled Artists and Performers to share her art and and collaborate/network with other artist with disabilities. For her to learn more about painting with her foot and mouth and making a living with this she could go to the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists website.
Harry
Harry can purchase a Text speech generator. I recommend TextSpeak Wireless AAC Speech Generator,
for $529. Another text speech device is TextSpeak TS04-P Palm for $579. A smaller version of the TextSpeakwriter.
This will allow Harry to type his responses and have the read allowed as he types.
Harry’s instructor should provide Harry with the discussion questions ahead of time, so Harry can write out his contribution. Harry should use text read aloud to participate in the discussion if thats an option. With his group partners giving him a full turn to participate. The discussion should also be structured so Harry has clear entry points to add his commentary. Harry should also be allowed to text in his responses to the teacher/group. Who can read his response if there is additional things Harry wants to add to his previously written response. Harry should check out the Coalition for Disabled Musicians for more networking opportunities for musicians with disabilities.
